POVray Raytracing Utilities
This is by no means a complete list of utilities available for use with POVray, though Animation Utilities can now be found here too. I'll be adding to this as I find good stuff out there that I think is worth directing your attention to. Also note that most of these are for the PC, and some may be for Windows 95.
Utilities
Programs
- Terrain Maker for POVray - an excellent DOS-based program for making heightfields, which gives you full control over the landforms you create - well worth getting hold of! A Win95 version is on the way...
- Universe for Win95 - Now on version 1.6, this is a great little 'post-processing' program for adding background starfields, globular clusters, large stars, nebulae and now planets too! It's not expensive to register too - well worth a look!
Check out Jason Widdy's Starfield POV #include for another way to add starfields directly to your POV files!
- John Beale's Homepage. John has written loads of useful programs for use with POVray, including the popular (and very good!) heightfield generators Gforge and HF-Lab. You can find examples of his work, as welll as all his other programs at this site.
Modellers
For starters, I'll say that I'm going only on looks and reputation when it comes to modellers - these things are far too complicated for me! I don't use 'em myself since I never put anything more complex than a few spheres and heightfields in my pictures, so if they turn out to be no good then don't blame me ;).
- AC3D - AC3D is a 3D-modeller for Win95, SGIs, Sun, and Linux written by Andy Colebourne here at Lancaster. It looks pretty neat, and can output POV files.
- Moray - a lot of people swear by this, so it's probably good ;). It's available in Window95 and DOS flavours.
POV #includes
- Chris Colefax' #includes page. A collection of very nifty POV #includes, the highlights of which are Chris' own very good lens effects #include and a rather stupendous-looking galaxy maker. You can also find an object exploder, liquid spray maker, and many more here! This is an essential site to visit if you use POVray.
- Nathan Kopp's Lens Flare #include. This great addition to POVray allows you to create very good lens flares in a scene - great for those of us who don't have Adobe Photoshop 8)! Nathan's include is very versatile and easily customisable, and allows you to create all manner of lens flares - a great utility! His pages also include many other useful POV utilities.
- 3d Starfield POV code by Jason Widdy. A very useful POVfile if you want to make starfields within POVray. I've included some comments from both Jason and myself about how best to use this at the bottom of the scene file. Note that as it stands it isn't an #include - it's an actual .pov file, but you can easily modify it to turn it into an #include file. If it doesn't produce the expected results then play around with the sphere sizes til it does.
Animation Utilities
- pjBmp2Avi - this very useful (and simple to use) Win95/NT program by Paul Roberts does a similar job to DTA, but converts a sequence of bmp files into an avi video file. This will take you to Paul's webpage containing the description of the most recent version. The file itself can be downloaded from his utilities page.
