These images have nothing to do with space or planets and were produced from a purely aesthetic standpoint, so I'm calling them "art" 8). Granted, it's all still pretty geometrical, but someone (I forget who) DID once say that raytracing was a way to express art mathematically anyway - as usual for me, I'm taking that rather literally in the examples here!
Fearful Symmetry. I know, laugh at the pretentious name but hey, it's art - I HAD to make it sound pretentious! 8). This is the rather cool image gracing the top left of the main Raytracing Hub. There's a lot going on in this picture, illustrating some of the weirder aspects of POVray - each of the four small spheres are light sources, the two on the left and right are emitting 'negative light' (hence the bright shadows) and the two in the fore and background are emitting normal light. The main sphere in the middle is a bumpy, iridescent glass orb. Finally, the whole thing is suspended above a huge Red_Marble sphere and illuminated from above by a spotlight. I'm rather proud of this image, it's one of the first I ever did and to be honest I haven't come up with anything like it since!
The Crystal Palace. Originally, the RayTracing page was going to be called 'Space Dog's Crystal Palace', but I figured that would just confuse everyone! It's quite simple - a glass/crystal dodecahedron, embedded in a VERY big bumpy sphere, with an Apocalyptic sky. I like it anyway ;)
VRML title graphic. This is a title graphic I made using POVray for my now-defunct VRML Hub. It was originally extremely difficult to get this image made using POVray for Windows 3.00 - I think the font that I used caused it to crash all the time before it finished rendering it - however, I had no problems with the later versions of POVwin. I finally managed to get something produced though, and I think the end result was worth the effort!
