Welcome to the Lair of Evil Dr Ganymede!

First, if you've come here looking for the Web Pages of the Apocalypse then don't panic - you HAVE found them! I redesigned the site around a new theme, but mostly the content is the same.

The prior incarnation of these pages - the aforementioned Web Pages of the Apocalypse - was online since late 1995 and lured quite a few people to their dooms in their time, so thanks for coming! This site is currently divided into three main Hubs - Art, Roleplaying, and Work. As described below, you will find lots of original roleplaying material here by myself and some friends of mine written mainly for White Wolf's 'World of Darkness' setting (material on some different settings is in the works too), a great deal of raytracing resources aimed primarily at the free POVray raytracer (but probably just as useful if you use other raytracing packages), as well a page of links to my friends on the web.

So who is the mysterious Evil Dr Ganymede??!

The Evil Dr Ganymede is a mad scientist who works from his secret underground lair on Ganymede, Jupiter's largest moon. He works out there to get away from those who would mock and restrict his research, and to get some peace and quiet. Besides, the view is much nicer than anything on Earth. He also likes to refer to himself in the third person...
Like any self-respecting evil genius, EDG spends much of his time plotting and scheming on his his Insane Masterplan (TM), which is of course a complex work of sheer self-serving brilliance.

  • Stage 1 is to destroy Europa. Europa is another moon of Jupiter that's been hogging the media spotlight with all this talk of oceans - anyone would think it's the only moon that has water in it. But Ganymede's ocean is about ten times deeper and is much more interesting, yet it remains neglected. Well, with Europa blasted to smithereens, the other scientists will have to look at Ganymede and realise how interesting it is. And besides, Europa often blocks EDG's view of Io...

  • Stage 2 is to bring the glory of Ganymede to the hapless masses of Earth. This involves fitting a World Engine to Ganymede (working on that...) moving the satellite to Earth Orbit, and replacing the Earth's Moon with Ganymede. This will of course entail destroying the existing Moon, but the Europa Smasher should have recharged sufficiently by then to turn Luna to dust. With the Moon out of the way and Ganymede in Earth orbit, Ganymede's ice shell will melt and reveal its oceans - then the pitiful mortals of Earth will cower beneath the reflected brilliance of Ganymede (under the watchful, terrible gaze of Evil Dr Ganymede in his now-floating Lair), and all shall know its name!

    MWAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!!

Er... right. Who are you really...?

    Earthworm Jim with a PhD
This is a pretty good (albeit slight doctored [no pun intended!])
representation of what I'll be like when I finally get my PhD!
Sigh. OK, you got me. In reality I'm Dr. Constantine Thomas - I've finally finished my Planetary Science Ph.D. here at Lancaster University in the U.K., after a whopping seven years and two months! My thesis title is 'The Structural and Orbital Evolution of the Galilean Satellites' - with special focus on Ganymede. 'Evil Dr Ganymede' is a nickname that one of my friends (hi Dave!) coined for me that I thought was really quite good and it kinda stuck, so I developed an alter-ego out of it which is what you see here.

I am in the fortunate position of enjoying the work that I do (even if I do get a bit cynical about it sometimes), since astronomy has been an hobby of mine ever since I picked up my first astronomy book when I was four years old. You can find out more about what I'm doing on my Work Page if you're interested.

Oh yeah, just one extra note. I'm MALE. You'd be amazed how many people who just know me over the internet (without meeting me in person) assume that I'm female. Never mind that there have been Kings and Emperors named Constantine in the past (NOT Queens and Empresses!). I suspect that there's a hidden brain-fart generator embedded in the second 't' of my first name that makes people think I'm really called "Constance" or something :). So, I just thought I'd make that clear once and for all here, since this page is about me! :)

But these pages aren't just about my work - I have several hobbies too.

My main passion is Roleplaying. As if you didn't notice already, I'm a roleplayer! I have lots of different tabletop RPGs, but my favourites are Mage, Wraith, and the upcoming 'Transhuman Space' RPG from Steve Jackson Games. I've also developed my own backgrounds (one of which - The Continuum - is currently available on this website as a supplement for White Wolf's Mage: The Ascension). You can find out more about the roleplaying games I like on my Roleplaying Hub.

Another hobby of mine is Raytracing - computer art - which I use to generate pictures of planetary landscapes and other astronomical scenes. Raytracing is much like photography - you set up a scene and then 'take a picture' of it - all you need is a good imagination and the ability to visualise a scene and easily re-orient yourself around it. The software I use for this is a wonderful package called POVray (see http://www.povray.org for more information), which has the advantages of being absolutely free, available on just about every platform you can think of, easily extendable, and has a massive web of support among its users on the internet. In fact, it can do just about everything that the expensive commercial packages such as Lightwave or 3D Studio can, and in some cases can do even more or do it better! You can check out my images and find out more about my art on my Raytracing Hub.

Music is my life - in my waking hours, I find it much easier to concentrate with music that I enjoy in the background, and the only time I crave silence is when I am trying to get some sleep! I have a vast collection of CDs and LPs, spanning quite a variety of genres. I did have a Music Hub here but I've decided to dispense with it since the fan pages I linked to were usually run by students and often disappeared after a couple of years... so I'll just list them here and throw in a random assortment of links. Some of the artists I'm into include: All About Eve, Bon Jovi, Jann Arden, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Heart, Curve, The Levellers, Nine Inch Nails, Third Eye Blind, The Bangles, Garbage, Counting Crows, Marillion, Rush, Sarah McLachlan (and many other Canadian bands), Guns 'n Roses, Prodigy, Underworld, Massive Attack, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Korn, Staind, Bush, Live, Creed... the list goes on and on!

    Techie stuff

These pages are best viewed with IE 5+ or Netscape Navigator 4.72+ at 1024x768x16 million colours, but they should still look fine (if not a little more crowded) with earlier versions of Netscape and/or lower resolution screens.

This site was built using basic HTML and a text editor. This site also contains no Java, Javascript, Shockwaves, banners, or unecessary animated gifs or graphics to break your browser and clog up the bandwidth! Sure, it might look a bit boring but I've always thought that it's content that counts, and not fancy graphics.
